Oct. 22, 2026: The Plank, the Speck, and the Right Order of Judgment

BIG IDEA:  A life sent by Jesus will strive to back up words with action.

Matthew 7:1-4 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?”

Galatians 2:13 “And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him, so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.”

Jesus never said that accountability among believers is wrong. What He confronted was the disorder of judgment -- rushing to identify the failures of others while remaining blind to our own. Peter learned this lesson the hard way. Even after God had transformed his understanding of grace and inclusion, Peter slipped back into the hypocrisy of religious prejudice when it was socially convenient. Paul had to confront him directly. The standard Jesus sets is clear: examine yourself first. The goal of speaking into someone else's life should always be restoration, never superiority. Humility is the only foundation from which genuine accountability can be built.

Reflection Question: Is there someone in your life you have been quick to judge while avoiding a similar examination of yourself?

Practical Application: Before offering any correction or criticism to another person this week, pause and ask yourself honestly whether the same issue exists in any form in your own life. Lead with that honesty.

MEMORY VERSE for the Week:
Psalm 86:11 “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.”
