Oct. 13, 2026: A Sure Foundation in an Unstable World
BIG IDEA: “A truly sent life is built around the cornerstone of the person of Jesus Christ.”
MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
1 Peter 2:6 “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
Isaiah 28:14-16
“Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers, who rule this people in Jerusalem! Because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: Whoever believes will not be in haste.’”
This passage shows Judah’s false sense of security (Judah was the nation to the south of Israel). They thought they were safe, but they trusted lies instead of the Lord. This connects directly to the devotional theme of building on a sure foundation rather than unstable foundations.
Isaiah spoke these words during a national crisis in Israel. Assyria threatened and overtook Israel, and Judah had a false sense of security. They thought they were safe. They believed they could trust in political alliances, military strength, and their own wisdom. But God exposed the truth: their foundation was not secure.
In the middle of judgment, God gave a promise. The sermon says, “Isaiah actually interrupts the news of judgment to give a preview of what true salvation will look like.” That preview was Jesus. God was saying, in effect, “If you build your life on this stone, you will be fine. But if you don’t, you will fail.” Jesus is not a temporary fix. He is a sure foundation.
The world often gives us false foundations: success, image, popularity, money, control, romance, or personal strength. These things may look stable for a season, but they cannot hold the full weight of your life. Jesus can. When life shakes, the question is not whether you have built something impressive. The question is whether you have built on the right foundation.
Action Step: Identify one false foundation you are tempted to trust in. Pray and surrender it to God, saying: “Jesus, I choose to build this part of my life around You.”
