Sept. 24, 2026: The Names of Jesus and What They Mean for You

BIG IDEA: The world preaches a tolerance of stuckness, but God’s kindness offers us freedom through Jesus.

Isaiah 9:6-7 
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.”

Colossians 1:15-20 
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

Seven hundred years before the birth of Christ, Isaiah listed names that describe who Jesus is and what he would accomplish. Wonderful Counselor. Mighty God. Everlasting Father. Prince of Peace. These are not titles of a distant deity. They are descriptions of a God who chose to enter human history as a child, born naturally but conceived supernaturally.
 
Nothing like this had ever happened in the history of all of humanity.  Colossians 1 echoes this same reality, describing Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the one through whom all things were created and in whom all things hold together. Whatever is falling apart in your world today, Jesus holds it. He is not scrambling for answers. He is the answer.

Personal Reflection: 
Look back over Isaiah 9:6.  Which of the names of Jesus from Isaiah 9:6 speaks most directly to your current season of life? Do you need his counsel, his strength, his fatherly care, or his peace?

Practical Application: 
Spend time today in prayer, addressing Jesus specifically by the name that resonates most with your need. Do not rush through it. Sit with that name and allow it to reshape how you see your circumstances.
