Oct. 19, 2026: The Danger of an Empty Religion
BIG IDEA: A life sent by Jesus will strive to back up words with action.
Isaiah 29:1-4 “Ah, Ariel, Ariel, the city where David encamped! Add year to year; let the feasts run their round. Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be moaning and lamentation, and she shall be to me like an Ariel. And I will encamp against you all around, and will besiege you with towers and I will raise siegeworks against you. And you will be brought low; from the earth you shall speak, and from the dust your speech will be bowed down; your voice shall come from the ground like the voice of a ghost, and from the dust your speech shall whisper.”
Isaiah 29:13 “And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,”
God spoke through Isaiah to a people who had mastered the appearance of faith without its substance. They drew near to God with their lips while their hearts remained distant. Religion had become routine. Ceremony had replaced sincerity. The sobering truth is that God is not impressed by religious performance. He sees past the words and rituals, straight into the heart. Ask yourself today: is your faith a living, breathing trust in God, or has it settled into comfortable habit? God desires nearness -- not just the appearance of it.
Reflection Question: Where in your life have religious routines replaced genuine relationship with God?
Practical Application: Set aside ten minutes today to sit quietly before God with no agenda, no list, and no performance. Start by speaking Psalm 86:11 directly to God. Simply be present with Him and invite Him to examine your heart honestly. As God speaks, take a note to remember what He shared with you in the moment.
MEMORY VERSE for the Week:
Psalm 86:11 “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.”
