Sept. 30, 2026: Knowing Yourself

Big Idea: To live a SENT life, you must know the enemy, know yourself, and depend on God.

Memory Verse for the Week:
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

1 John 2:15-17
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
This passage identifies three broad categories of worldly temptation: the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life, and reminds believers that the world and its desires are passing away. Romans 12:1-2 -- Believers are called to present themselves as living sacrifices and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds rather than conformed to the patterns of this world.

The enemy does not use a one-size-fits-all approach. He is strategic and customized. He has studied your habits, your needs, your weaknesses, and even your strengths. He will use your ambition to make you proud. He will use your love for your family to crowd out your love for God. He will use your wealth to make you self-sufficient. He will use your gifts to make you self-centered. This is why self-awareness is not vanity. It is wisdom. You cannot guard what you refuse to examine. The Holy Spirit is not asking you to live in fear of yourself. He is asking you to live in honest, humble awareness so that you can bring every part of your life under the lordship of Jesus Christ.

Reflection:
Which of the three categories -- lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, or pride of life -- tends to be your most consistent point of vulnerability? What good thing in your life has the potential to become a substitute for God?

Practical Application:
Set aside fifteen minutes this week for an honest inventory of your habits, appetites, and ambitions. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any area where a good thing has quietly begun to function as a god thing in your life.
