Aug. 13, 2026: WHEN JUDGMENT RELENTS

BIG IDEA: REPENTANCE is the ULTIMATE SAVING TRANSACTION of the HUMAN SOUL.

Reading:
Jonah 3:8-10
“but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.” When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.”

Devotional:
The passage in Jonah 3 closes with one of the most remarkable statements in all of the Old Testament. When God saw that the people had turned from their evil way, He relented of the disaster He had planned.

This is the concept of sovereign contingency at work. Repent and be forgiven. Reject Him and be cursed. God is not manipulated. He is not inconsistent. He is not weak. Rather, He has built into the fabric of His creation a genuine invitation for human beings to respond to His Word, and He honors that response with grace.
 
The Ninevites gave up their most prized identity, their culture of violence, as evidence that their repentance was real. God saw it and responded with mercy. This is the pattern of the Gospel. Genuine turning produces genuine grace.

Reflection:
Is there something you are holding onto that is keeping you from fully turning toward God?

Practical Application:
Read 1 John 1:9, which speaks of God's faithfulness to forgive when we confess. Spend time in honest confession today, naming specific things rather than speaking in generalities.
