Oct. 27, 2026: The Danger of Smooth Things

BIG IDEA:  A SENT LIFE is driven by the POWER and the COMPASSION of our LOVING GOD.

VERSE OF THE WEEK Isaiah 30:15   “This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength”

Isaiah 30:9-15
“For they are a rebellious people, lying children, children unwilling to hear the instruction of the LORD; who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right; speak to us smooth things, prophesy illusions, leave the way, turn aside from the path, let us hear no more about the Holy One of Israel.” Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, “Because you despise this word and trust in oppression and perverseness and rely on them, therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach in a high wall, bulging out and about to collapse, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant; and its breaking is like that of a potter’s vessel that is smashed so ruthlessly that among its fragments not a shard is found with which to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.” For thus said the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling,”

Proverbs 3:5-7
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”

The people of Judah told the prophets to stop telling them the truth. They wanted comfortable words, pleasant predictions, and messages that required nothing of them. Isaiah 30:10-11 captures this plainly: they wanted illusions, not instruction.

This is not an ancient problem. It is a present one. When the truth of God’s Word confronts a decision we have already made, the temptation is to seek out a voice that will affirm us rather than correct us. We may look for advice that makes us feel better, teaching that never challenges us, or friends who will agree with us even when we are drifting from God.

But God, in His love, refuses to offer us smooth things when rough truth is what we need. Proverbs 3:5-7 reminds us that leaning on our own understanding is precisely what leads us away from the right path. Wisdom begins with trusting God’s perspective over our own. The hard word from God is always a gift, because it points us back toward life.

Reflection Question:
Is there an area of your life where you have been seeking comfort and affirmation rather than honest, godly counsel?

Practical Application:
Identify one truth from Scripture that you have been avoiding or minimizing. Spend time today sitting with it honestly and asking God what obedience to that truth would look like in your specific situation.
