Oct. 16, 2026: Discipline That Leads to Righteousness
BIG IDEA: “A truly sent life is built around the cornerstone of the person of Jesus Christ.”
MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
1 Peter 2:6 “For it stands in Scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’”
Hebrews 12:5-6
“And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons? “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
Hebrews 12:11
“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”
The message from this week reminds us that God will not allow His people to continue endlessly on a destructive path. Sometimes He gets our attention through consequences. That does not always feel pleasant. In fact, Hebrews says discipline is painful when you are in the moment. But the pain is not pointless. God uses discipline to produce “the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”
Like a loving Father, God intervenes when His children are heading toward destruction. The sermon says, “As part of God’s love and mercy, He will never allow us to remain the way we are if we are on a reckless path.” Discipline is not God’s rejection. It is His rescue. It is not proof that He has abandoned us. It is proof that He is actively forming us.
It can be difficult to see God’s love when we are experiencing correction. But if God loves us, He will not ignore what is destroying us. He may expose sin, remove false security, or allow consequences so that we will return to Him. The goal is not humiliation. The goal is healing, holiness, and a deeper dependence on Jesus.
Action Step: Ask God, “What are You trying to teach me in this season?” Write down anything He brings to mind, and respond with obedience.
