Oct. 30, 2026: God Waits to Be Gracious
BIG IDEA: A SENT LIFE is driven by the POWER and the COMPASSION of our LOVING GOD.
VERSE OF THE WEEK Isaiah 30:15 “This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength”
Luke 15:11-24
“And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.”
Isaiah 30:18
“Therefore the LORD waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.”
Isaiah 30:18 may be the most tender verse in these chapters. After all of Judah’s stubbornness, after all the running to Egypt, after all the refusing to listen, God says that He has been waiting to be gracious.
He is not standing with arms crossed, waiting to say, “I told you so.” He is standing with arms open, waiting to show mercy.
The parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15 mirrors this perfectly. The son wastes what the father gave him. He runs away. He hits rock bottom. But when he finally comes home, the father sees him while he is still far off and runs to him.
That is the heart of God.
God does not wait for us to clean ourselves up before He moves toward us. He meets us in our brokenness. He receives us when we return. He restores what sin has damaged. He is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.
Maybe you have assumed God is tired of you. Maybe you have believed He is disappointed beyond repair. Maybe you have been waiting to return until you feel worthy enough. But grace does not begin when you become worthy. Grace begins because God is good.
Reflection Question:
Have you been waiting to return to God until you feel worthy enough? What would it mean to come to Him exactly as you are today?
Practical Application:
If there is an area of your life where you have been running from God or avoiding full surrender, take a concrete step today toward returning. This might mean a prayer of confession, a conversation with a trusted believer, or simply telling God out loud that you are done trying to handle it alone.
